obsessively updating my blog on christmas day

There is some truth to the old, old adage that says something along the lines of “having a significant other who functions as an audience for all the detritus that filters both in and out of one’s consciousness on an hourly basis greatly diminishes one’s tendency to focus all of this crap into consistent blog [...]

the Multifarious Origins of Santa Claus

Santa’s robe of red edged with white are the colours of Amanita muscaria, that the idea of Santa clambering down the chimney evokes the entry via the smoke hole into Siberian yurts during winter. Moreover, the reindeers that pull the sleigh can be seen to link to the reindeer-herder tribes who took the magic mushroom. And the magic flight of Santa Claus through the midwinter night sky is a superb expression of the basis of all shamanism – ecstasy, or the flight of the spirit.

orbs

In November, two orbs of light entered into Annie Dobson’s home.
are such orbs related, in any way, to the light artifacts found in photography? Largely a discredited aspect of paranormal study, photographic orbs are said by some to have an intentional and almost sentient mechanism of presentation. could they be an example of our consciousness [...]

ritual and performance

processions, seasonal festivals, the movement of the planets through their cyclical positions in the heavens, ritual decadence, asceticism, the cosmic kiss of billiards, the constant battle of the dionysian versus the apollonian desires. i’ve been thinking about medieval mystery pageants lately, and they make me want to trek up to the cloisters and move through [...]

seasonable warmth

salvage yard miscellany, originally uploaded by ccontill.
These images are from an architectural salvage yard in barnegat, new jersey. It’s a sleepy shore town, near Long Beach Island, where we spent Thanksgiving. The yard is, visually, a sort of hoarding writ large, with commercial benefits for the owners. Here are some of the treasures at Recycling [...]
