Anyone who knows me knows of my affinity for performance art, particularly that of the feminist variety. It was a lucky turn of events, then, that during my vacation to Berlin with S. this past week that a feminist video and performance art conference was taking place at the Akademie der Kunst, with a really amazing accompanying exhibit. The speakers conducted their presentations in English, so we got to sit in on some interesting talks. The exhibit itself consisted of videos and documentation of works primarily of 60’s and 70’s performance art and dance. There were some old favorites, like Orlan and Carolee Schneeman, and I also discovered some new ones, specifically Martha Wilson, whose investigations of the self in both parody and in masquerade reminded me of my own obsession with my own face.The show had a lot of crossover with the WHACK! feminist art exhibit at ps1 last year, which I’m pretty sure I raved about in this very blog.
here are links to some films that you should definitely watch, especially if you tend to think of performance art as somewhat pretentious. I think these particular films that were shown as parts of the exhibit show the playful and often hilarious nature of performance, which is what has always drawn me back to its study.
