Tice Farm
When I was a wee child with dirt on my face from playing in the creek behind our house all day, there was a magical place called Tice’s Farm. It sat on a hilltop, just a stone’s throw away from where I grew up. It was a homestead from out of time, hemmed in by slick macadam roads. The Farm itself was a marketplace, selling fresh produce and pumpkins with neon faces, so busy in the fall that traffic would back up down the hillside. There was a copper pipe that ran the length of one of the walls, and you could pay a quarter to turn the spigot and fill a tiny cup with apple cider, fresh from the barrels. Scarecrows and bushels of apples sat in the cornfield out front. You could take a truck up a dirt road to the orchards and pick fresh apples from the gnarled old trees. Standing in the grass I would feel roots growing from my feet, reaching back to the earliest time anyone had ever eaten an apple in that field. Looking down on Bergen County, the leaves having already turned from orange to brown, I could feel the weight of centuries on my shoulders. The farm is gone now, parceled out into lots of office space, reflective obsidian rectangles humming with industry.
